What Are Finned Tube Heating Elements?

A finned tube heating element is a copper tube with aluminium fins mechanically bonded to the outside. The fins dramatically increase the surface area exposed to passing air, giving significantly more heat output per metre than plain copper tube alone.

Gunning manufacture six element types in 15mm and 22mm copper tube, with aluminium fin profiles ranging from 40mm × 95mm to 108mm × 216mm. They are the elements we use inside our own trench heaters - available separately for integration into your own heating assemblies, skirting heaters, cabinets or bespoke enclosures.

Available Types and Dimensions

All elements use seamless copper tube to BS EN 1057 Table X with 1050 "O" grade corrugated aluminium fins, mechanically bonded with integral spacing collars and interlocking return edges.

  • Type 01: 2 × 50mm × 76mm fins, 22mm copper tube
  • Type 02: 76mm × 76mm fins, 22mm copper tube
  • Type 03: 2 × 108mm × 108mm fins, 22mm copper tube (double-stack)
  • Type 04: 108mm × 108mm fins, 22mm copper tube
  • Type 05: 40mm × 95mm fins, 15mm copper tube
  • Type 06: 2 × 40mm × 95mm fins, 15mm copper tube (double-stack)
  • Lengths up to 3m (1.5m for ease of delivery). Shorter lengths cut to exact size. Plain ends - joinable by solder, push-fit, compression or crimp.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 15mm and 22mm tube elements? The 22mm tube elements carry more water volume and are suited to higher-output applications. The 15mm elements are used where smaller casings or lower outputs are appropriate. We'll advise on which is right for your project based on required output and available space.

Can finned tube elements be joined together? Yes - the plain copper ends can be joined using solder, push-fit, compression or crimp fittings, in exactly the same way as standard copper pipework.

What lengths can you supply? Standard lengths from 1,000mm to 3,000mm. Shorter lengths can be cut to your exact requirement.

How do the aluminium fins attach to the copper tube? The fins are corrugated aluminium, mechanically pressed onto the tube with integral spacing collars. The folded edges lock together around the tube. This is a permanent mechanical assembly - not an adhesive bond - and will not loosen with heat cycling.

Can these elements be used in low-temperature hot water (LTHW) systems? Yes. The elements work across the full range of LTHW flow temperatures. Output will vary with flow temperature - contact us for output data at your system's design temperature.

Do I need to box these elements in? Yes. The aluminium fins are exposed and natural aluminium colour - they are not finished for aesthetic exposure and have a sharp edge. They must be housed inside a casing, cover or enclosure.
